This June, more than 3,000 cyclists, roadies, and virtual cyclists participate in AIDS/LifeCycle, a 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Riders raise funds for the life-saving services offered by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
This year, I’ll be one of those riders.
I am riding to give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. The HIV and AIDS epidemic has taken the lives of far too many. For most people living with the disease, the condition is chronic but manageable. For some, life-saving medical care is just too expensive. The San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center provide much-needed resources to those who simply can’t afford the medical care they deserve. I am riding 545 miles to raise money to ensure these people receive life-sustaining treatment.
While riding a bike such a tremendous distance sounds daunting, I am convinced I can do it. Having only done what I call “neighborhood” rides of very short distances, this experience is like nothing I have done before. I’ll admit it...I’m nervous! Riding a proper road bike and learning how to do it correctly is scary. At this stage of the game, I have taken three relatively short training runs and have already fallen twice. Getting used to the snap-on pedals is challenging! But when I think of what I am up against compared to those I am riding for, I know my challenges are relatively simple. I am preparing for an event that will help save lives. For this reason, I know I will be successful.
