How to Create the Most Relaxing Bedroom

Creating a calming and inviting space to sleep is essential since the bedroom is typically the room in which you spend the majority of your time. While your bedroom is primarily used for slumber, you need to think of it as a room that provides comfort and relaxation. Here are some tips to make the most of your sacred space.

1. Splurge on your mattress and bedding.
One of my favorite hotel experiences involved a room which was ironically rather ordinary. When it was time for bed, I remember thinking that I had never been more comfortable than I was at that moment. The mattress had the perfect amount of firmness and softness, the sheets were crisp and perfectly white, and the pillows were incredibly welcoming. Duplicate your favorite hotel experience in your own room and you can relive your favorite hotel stay every night.

2. Use soft colors.
To ensure a warm feeling, use colors that envelop you as you enter the room. Avoid pops of bright color, especially on accent walls. Think serenity at its core and work with welcoming and inviting tones. Soft blues and taupes and warm earth tones are good examples.

3. Avoid clutter.
Keep your room clean and free from mess. Don’t over-furnish your bedroom. Give yourself ample space around your bed and if space permits, allow for a seating area to rest and rejuvenate.

4. Add a rug.
If you have wood, stone, or tile floors, don’t forget to add some warmth for your feet by selecting a rug to enhance your entire living space. Anchor the rug under your bed and make certain it is large enough to use when stepping in and out of the bed. A rug should both complement your décor and provide comfort.

5. Lighting, lighting, lighting.
Whenever possible, allow for natural light to flood your room and make certain you are also able to block it for a perfect night of sleep. A darkened room truly allows you to relax and enjoy your space while a room filled with sunlight can brighten your mood. Use soft light in overhead cans and portable lamps to create additional warmth when natural light isn’t bright enough.

6. Use candles to enhance the mood.
A scented candle or diffuser does wonders to make your room more welcoming. Fragrances like lavender, chamomile, and vanilla add to your experience. Fuel your senses!
